Mangalore - Restaurant Review
As an avid foodie, I have got around to most of the restaurants in Mangalore (Dont be surprised by this. Mangalore is a small place). Here are my thoughts on those restaurants. Please note: There are more restaurants in Mangalore than those listed here. The ones below are where I have gone, and comments are purely based on my experience. Now, since I am a non-vegetarian, my comments could be more useful for my fellow meat eaters.
Fine Dining
The 3 best restaurants for fine dining, and where you could feel safe taking your hard-to-please customers for lunch or dinner would be:
- Pallkhi - Near Jyothi Cirle. Fantastic food. Place is not very spacious though. Service is good, but may slow down on busy days. Great for north Indian and local delicacies
- Taj Manjarun – Bandar. Quite unlike the usual Tajs though. They do have various theme buffets
- Gold Finch – Very new to Mangalore. I found the food a bit heavy. Corporates have started preferring this one over Taj for their employees stop over, given its new-ness, location, and the air being a lot more vegetarian friendly (ok, I have to explain this one. The air around Taj smells of fish since it is located very close to the waters and market. One of our vegetarian clients complained to us that he couldn’t stand the smell of fish)
The next best ones, where it would be good for you to test before you take your customers include:
- Royal Treat – Kankanady. One of my favourites. Great Moghul food. Very consistent on taste. Limited but well thought out menu.
- Madhuvan Village – Yeyyadi. Rustic setup, complete with a small waterfall and lake. Local and sea food tastes great.
- Madhuvan @ Moti Mahal – Falnir. The place has live music during dinner time, and has serves good local delicacies. Ambience is average, but ideal for people who like to take it slow.
- Abhiman – Bunts circle. Food is good. But place is not very spacious.
- Amazon – Empire mall, PVS Circle. Ambience and food average.
- Viceroy – Kadri. Good to sit outdoors. Beware of mosquitoes. Ask for a coil.
- Pegasus – On the NH to Kerala. Ambience is good. Food is average.
- Trishna – Airport road. Ambience is good, but that’s where I would stop. Food disappointed me
- Coconut Grove – I’ve gone there only once, and nothing there makes me want to go again. Found the food a bit too oily.
The next 3 serve good food, but I wouldn’t suggest taking your would be inlaws here if you want to impress them. Ambience is set more for a friends dinner party.
- Surabhi – Near KSRTC Bus stand. Food is good. Try Andhra Chicken only if you have a bag of sugar handy with you. Not for the weak or normal hearted. (I dig spicy stuff, but I wasn’t ready for this one)
- Maharaja – Near Jyothi Circle. Sea food is great. Good for fun with friends.
- Kavitha Residency – I go here when I feel like eating a plate of regular fried rice and butter chicken. If you want a room, try Kavitha. Rooms are clean and well priced, I hear
- Hao Ming - Balmatta. Undoubtedly the best Chinese restaurant in Mangalore. Or for that matter, the best I have gone to in South India.
Quick Eats
Here’s the list of places I like for quick eats (a burger, fish n chips etc)
- Diesel Café: Part of Prestige Hotel (I hear actor Suneil Shetty owns this place). Small, but has good continental menu
- Chefs: I love the burgers here, esp the chicken supreme.
- Cherry Square: Lovely little place. Great sandwiches.
- Pop Tates, Juice Junction: Try the Rotisserie chicken and Shawarma rolls. Lip smacking.
- Sizzler: Near Mangala Stadium: As the name suggests, specializes on sizzlers. I found them very average though.
Good Food. Period.
Following are places I go for just good food. No bells and whistles.
- Narayana’s: Bandar. A very small place near the Taj Manjarun that specializes in fried fish. People flock there to eat fish. As soon as you seat yourself, they serve you a plate of rice with couple of side dishes and fish curry. Then the waiters come around with a large platter of various types of fried fishes from which you could choose yours. I heard due to the success of Narayana’s, Diesel Café has included a ‘Narayana style fish fry’ in their menu.
-Woodlands: Bunts Circle. Regular Brahmin style lunch and dinner. One meal costs Rs 30, and includes poori or chappathi, rice and dishes. You will feel satisfied after having the meal. Guaranteed.
- Janatha Deluxe: KS Rao road. I love their breakfast and thalis here.
- Ayodhya: Near PVS Circle. Famous for authentic Mangalore food.
Now, I still have a few places I want to get to. Those include Hotel Taj Mahal (heard coffee is great here), Shetty’s Kori Rotti, Kudla, Temperature Biriyani place, Dinoos. And now, there’s a new hotel that has come up -Deepa Comfort, right near the place i live. Should try that once. Will keep you posted.

Really enjoyed reading your blog on Mangalore. I would love to move to Mangalore some day and live there.
Where is Diesel Cafe located ? Have you tried eating the ‘podis/bajjis’ at a small shop in Car Street called ‘Ballis’?
Best regards
Prashant

Thanks Prashant.
Diesel cafe is between Jyothi and Bendoorwell (behind Hao Hao, near Juice Junction).
Yep, I’ve done the bajjis at Ballis
Do you know any other interesting places around here?

As a foodie, I could recommend the following favorites:-
1) Foodland Restaurant- Ballalbagh. Excellent mangalorean style seafood, non-veg and Chinese.
2) Mohini Vilas- Opp Srinivas Hotel, Hampankatta for the best ‘tuppa dosas, biscut rotis and bakala bhaath’.
3) Kudla Restaurant- Mangalorean style seafood. Nr Jyothi /Manipal Hospital.
Is Mangalore losing its charm as a small town with the advent of malls, skyscrapers et al?

I love that you have mentioned places like Narayana’s which very few of my friends have noticed.I am pretty new to Mangalore and your blog is a great read and packed with info.
Could you help me with finding some activities for a girl?
like gym,aerobics,yoga,fitness(pilate/dance) classes.
I had been to some places which were either too expensive or too shady or not girl-friendly.most of the info on the web is also out-dated.
I am pretty much an outdoor person but I can’t find good yoga classes or any other kind of good teachers for such things.
Are there any basket ball nets around the city or parks where they have those , so one can just go and shoot some hoops?
Also I have been swimming at Manjarun and that’s the only clean pool I have seen so far, the mangala stadium pool has ladies hours which are in the peak afternoon and otherwise they have competition batches with kids splashing all around.
THe moti mahal pool had people spitting all over the place!!
Manjarun was good but too pricey.
I was told about Eden aquatic club but someone told me that i will need to get a pricey membership to use their pool.Is that true?
AM sorry that i have written so much.AM just really curious and want to get into my element and get fit.
Great blog going on here.

Whew, that was probably the longest comment I’ve got. Thanks for taking time out to do this.
.. And you ask tough questions. Lemme try answering a few.
Gym - Talwalkars is the best around, but pricey. Mangala stadium has a new gym which is pretty decent (At Rs 300 per month, this is probably the best kept secret around). Moti mahal gym is stuffy.. I dont know much abt Taj gym to comment. Yoga - Dr Rajesh Padkal has a good yoga center near Pumpwell circle. (Oldest and very reasonable one. i would recommend this one). Of course, you would’ve tried VLCC - they have aerobics I think. Cant help u with dance classes etc. I know some of my friends who joined salsa classes.. if I get info, i will write a post here. Basketball - Once again, Mangala stadium (outdoor) would be ur option. Not sure if there are any indoor ones. Mangala stadium has a tennis court and a great shuttle court (wooden). Swimming - Eden is the best. I think you would have to take a life membership (around 80k - 1 lak). But they have swell facilities including tennis, rooms, tie ups with RCI etc - so may be well worth it. Pilikula has a golf course if you are interested. Cycling is another thing u could look at..

Hehe! Wow…I should thank you, not the other way around.I have been asking around so many people for places I could get out and do some activities and you seem to have an in-depth knowledge about that too.
hehehe even if you say my questions were tough…lol….you answer them so perfectly:)
Talwalkars- i have been there and was hustled into a cubicle by two ladies who tried to squeeze 20,000rs without letting me see the whole place…so i just practically ran out of there.because all i needed to do was find a simple place to work out without throwing away my pocket money so easily.
And i will be definitely checking out the best kept secret!wow..i had no idea.
would they have trainers for ladies out there…it’s ok,i’ll find out for myself.
they have basket ball courts there where i can play….? yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
yoga- will definitely check it out.wow! everything is so far away but luckily they have buses so just have to find out routes.nothing impossible.:)
Vlcc- i really had no idea that they had aerobic lessons.have been there too but this is news to me.will check up with them soon
a wooden shuttle court! wow! never heard of it.
eden- i will have to save up for that one but it’s definitely worth it after your description.
thank you so very much.it’s so kind of you to have posted all this for me. ;D you’re so sweet.

Hi,
I am planning to visit Kukke temple and a day and spend a day in Mangalore. Your blog on the eateries are very impressive. Infact I was staying in Bangalore for 5 years and the only Mangalore food I used to have was from a restaurent called Mangalore Pearl. But during my first ever visit to Mangalore, I am sure I will visit atleast 3-4 mentioned in your blog. I am a foodie and am really mesmerized by Mangalore sea food. Am eagerly waiting for D-day. Thanks. Is it possible for you to let me know the best mode of travelling to Kukke from Mangalore? I was told to take bus from Mlr, is this a right one? If yes, how is the bus frequency? Thanks once again.

Thanks Karthik, and I’m sure you will enjoy Mangalore (i should warn you though that the roads are at their worst right now - lots of construction going all around). And Yeah, there are a lot of express buses that could take you to Kukke. I’m not sure abt the frequency though
