Writing a few ‘bloglets’ this time instead of one single blog post. Suits my character too - Patience has never been my virtue.
——- Bloglet 1 ——
Me, being a PC, hasn’t had much to rejoice about lately. First, it was the series of ‘Get a Mac’ ads that gave me a permanent mental picture of myself as a bloated nerd. And the fact that most of my friends have switched to Mac hasn’t helped either. (Yep, even the fat one. The one who searched all the library catalogs for a certain Mac’book’). I feel lonely and left behind. I visit the doctor’s more often now. Maybe my revulsion towards apples has something to do with it. Microsoft’s ’I’m a PC campaign‘ has done little to uplift my tarnished image. I can’t take this any more. My fellow PCs, I say we unite and do something drastic. Like switching to Mac, maybe?
The ‘points to ponder’ below are dedicated to my miserable PC brothers.
1. Why do people consider Mac superior when we all know that Windows is well hung?
2. Legend goes that Microsoft copied stuff from Apple long back. But how come no one talks much about Apple’s plagiarism? Check out their HQ address, and you will know what I mean. That is totally Microsoft property. (One infinite loop)

Remember my ‘search for the elusive 6P’ post sometime back? Well, here’s an update on that: I’ve taken up cycling as a last ditch effort to shape up. (PS: Read ‘I’ve taken up cycling’ as ‘I bought a cycle 2 weeks back. Now I need to take it out’.) It seems like life has come a full cycle…err…circle for me. I started out with a cycle, moved up to a bike, and then a small car, then a bigger one, and now back to cycle. Talk about impulsive shopping habits.
Hmmm, what reason should I give my wife for not taking the cycle out today…

What’s up with the world these days? Recession, terrorism, communal riots, and now the leading investment banks going bankrupt. I’m really curious about what this would do to the marriage markets in India. Wonder how much the high flying MBAs are worth, especially those specialized in finance. Last I heard, they were on par with the pan-wallahs*. And they are getting picked up for peanuts by market savvy parents-in-law.
* As per research data (from totally unreliable sources) from a village in Andhra.

This bit sure would be heartening for my infy friends. Check out this article (http://blogs.livemint.com/blogs/lounge/archive/2008/09/30/google-heart-infosys-infosys-heart-employees.aspx) by Sidin Vadukut. A pretty interesting observation. (PS: I tried what was mentioned there, but it didn’t work for me.)

Some people just have it in them. I, for one, definitely don’t. I am talking about the art of keeping in touch. It’s gotten so much easier these days with web 2.0, but I should
admit that I still haven’t mastered the art. And I am thankful that I have wonderful friends who don’t get peeved at me for not keeping in touch. Even after a zillion mails and calls that I don’t return. I know some of my buds keep a diary with birthdays, anniversaries, and other important details regarding friends so they could call up and wish them. How I envy these folks. I know it’s impossible for me to do it.
Maybe that’s why Twitter doesn’t make any sense to me. I read all these articles about how great an application Twitter is, and what potential it holds. I can’t seem to understand what sense it would make to broadcast everything you do every other minute on the web. Now, come on, admit it - not many of us live a life that lends itself to spicy stuff that could interest anyone. Unless you are Britney Spears. Or for that matter our own Imraan Hashmi (That guy who goes around kissing girls. Lucky Bum). If I were to Tweet (I’m not sure if that’s the right Twitter lingo - My guess), it would go like this:

Today was just one of those days when nothing seemed to go right. End of the day, here I am, frustrated and restless. I feel like shooting myself in the b***. And shoot I will. Through this quick fire, simple (and silly and visually-not-so-appealing and a lot of other things) game. Try it out if you are in the mood: >> Shoot yourself
Game requisites: Grumpy mood, A total lack of design sense, A hole for a brain, and yeah - windows vista (Perfect for a ’slow’ day. )

Well, It’s difficult. The only other thing I found more difficult was to find a good (please note - it is bold, underlined, font 30) Flash programmer. (the only thing left for me to try is probably driving down to Bangalore and kidnapping one. Yeah, I am serious. If you are a good (again - bold, underlined, font 30) Flash programmer based in Mangalore, you know who to contact. ( I wont have a gun at your head, I promise).
Well, anyways, I thought it would be more worthwhile and a swell idea to put up a job board that is free, simple and targeted for Mangalore. Adding a free, simple classifieds for Mangalore would be double swell. Right? Well, I did it. You can find more details here.
Mangaloreans, Please use this. Remember the gun

Well, it feels like it’s been a while since I left Infosys (although it’s just been a month and half now). But I feel happy that I don’t miss Infosys anymore. Happy because it reassures me that my decision to leave was the right one, Happy because it tells me that I am confident about my future even without the safety and security of a high paying job and Happy because I have the freedom to do what I need to do. But maybe the single biggest factor for not missing Infy could be that I don’t feel like I have moved away (more…)

Dang! Apple has come out with its latest range of iPods today. Good news for everyone, but not so good for me!
Till 3 months back I didn’t own an iPod. In fact, the very concept of paying so much for an iPod especially when so many cheaper options were available didn’t make sense to me. (Not that I owned any of the cheaper alternatives anyways). You see - I am not a big music buff and listen to music occasionally. And hence, I was pretty happy with my Sony CD man.
That is, until that day we had an office trip to Mysore. I thought listening to music on the bus would be a good idea, and took out my CD man. Thanks to our state of the art roads, the CD kept skipping. If you have ridden on a bus to mysore (or for that matter any roads here down south) during rains, you may appreciate better what I am saying. But what made matters worse was the queer looks from my other (iPod owner) friends – as if I am someone from the past with a clunky CD man. That’s when my pride took a beating. Decided on the spot that I should go with the times. The very next week, got an Ipod nano 4g. I should say this thing grows on you. You just start to like the feeling of your hand on this silky smooth biscuit sized gadget. Well, that was 3 months back. And today, Apple announces the new ipod nano with video, and a bigger screen – all at the same price! Now I need to upgrade to one of these, lest I get those queer looks again. I dont want to be an outcast. Can I exchange my nano for one of ‘em touch screen iPods?

The world runs on Windows. (Atleast for now. Though many of my die-hard-apple-user friends may not agree). Enough has been written about the pains users have undergone once they are hooked on to Microsoft products. But hey, God does not make anything perfect - Neither does Microsoft.
Anyways. As I am writing this, I am facing a problem with my PC:
My help window keeps popping up every 5 seconds. Its been happenning for the last 1 month. Very irritating. Windows is trying to help me here, I understand. Maybe it is intelligent enough to understand that its dealing with a very dumb user here. But please, I would do anything to stop this. I have tried stopping the help services, and any advice I could find on the net about similar problems. The only thing left for me to do is reinstall windows. Before I do that, if any of you out there know of any solution to this please let me know. SOS.

Its amazing how much time, effort and money people are putting into creating social, professional networking sites. Success of orkut, linked in have no doubt proved beyond doubt that such sites do offer a lot to their subscribers. One such new professional networking sites that a friend of my friend has been involved in development is visiblepath (www.visiblepath.com). This is slightly different in that it is more of an enterprise tool, and uses complex algorithms to identify the strengths of relationship between people. The idea is to harness this information for better sales leads. If I understand it right, the tool analyzes the strengths of relationships between 2 people by analyzing the amount of interaction between them. So, if I wanted to get introduced to a potential client, I would just search in my enterprise for that person, and the results displayed would tell me which of my colleagues has the strongest relationship with him. Sounds cool, ain’t it?
