Chillout at Chennai

Saturday, June 28th, 2008 |

It’s been a hectic 3 weeks. Our product was finally done, and we had to sell it. We’d created several sales leads over the course of last few months, and had to go around for scheduled meetings. And that’s what we did last week. Boy, the reaction from the market has been very encouraging. And that would be an understatement. Couple of our prospect customers liked the product very much, but suggested some additional cutting edge stuff to be added. Back in Mangalore, that’s what we are doing now. Putting our heads down, and back to work for the next 2 weeks. Meanwhile, here’s an account of our sales trip (forgive me for certain exaggerations, my humble but valiant attempt at humor)

So, we’ve to travel to Chennai. Tomorrow. We are all set with the demos, brochures, wires, nuts, bolts, and the almost fully squeezed out tube of tooth paste. But there’s one thing missing. Oh, yeah - we needed to travel to Chennai. As in, we needed to get our a** moved from Mangalore to Chennai. (more…)

How does one sell a used TV in Mangalore?

Saturday, June 7th, 2008 |

Well, It’s difficult. The only other thing I found more difficult was to find a good (please note - it is bold, underlined, font 30) Flash programmer. (the only thing left for me to try is probably driving down to Bangalore and kidnapping one. Yeah, I am serious. If you are a good (again - bold, underlined, font 30) Flash programmer based in Mangalore, you know who to contact. ( I wont have a gun at your head, I promise).

Well, anyways, I thought it would be more worthwhile and a swell idea to put up a job board that is free, simple and targeted for Mangalore. Adding a free, simple classifieds for Mangalore would be double swell. Right? Well, I did it. You can find more details here.

Mangaloreans, Please use this. Remember the gun ;)

Am back.
Its been more than 3 months now since i stopped blogging here. Meanwhile, here’s what I did:

1. I got myself a domain. So, i will no longer be using funbag.wordpress.com. Rather i will be blogging here.
2. Took care of some personal stuff
3. Travelled a bit

Thats it! 3 months of my life summarized in 3 sentances. Isnt that saddening :).
I also plan to write a bit about Mangalore - a place that has been home for me (though on and off) ever since I left Cochin. Thats the other page you see on my site.

For want of a better subject

Spent some time this weekend thinking of a good photo idea for entering in a photography contest on road safety. One shot I thought would be interesting was that of a bullock cart with a speed limit road sign near it. So, off I went, searching for a bullock cart on Mangalore roads. An hour and many bumpy village roads later, I came back disappointed. Mangalore had indeed grown as a city. No bullock carts anywhere. As I hit the highway, I got into a traffic jam. I looked out of the window, and my eyes fell on this elephant - this elephant on a 2 lane highway with all vehicles behind it moving at, well, elephant’s pace. Hmm.. No bullock cart? No problem. Lets use the elephant, I thought to myself. So, i tracked it for some distance, trying to get a good pic with an appropriate traffic sign. Wasn’t very successful though. I ended up with some shots not fit for entering in the contest and didn’t know what else to do with those. Here are a couple. Maintaining a blog comes in handy sometimes. :)

Experience certainity - The Royal Darbar Way.

As a foodie, I take pride in stating that I can find out the ingredients of most Indian dishes just by smelling them. And I can tell you how stale they are too. I do eat out a lot (Not because I try to stay away from my wife’s cooking.. Just so you dont go in that direction). In Mangalore, we do not have many options for good restaurant food. But one amazing place that has dished out great Mughalai food with the same consistent good taste over the years is Royal Darbar (I think its now called ‘Royal Treat’, and has shifted couple of shops away. ‘Royal Darbar’ still exists, but thats not the same any more). If you are in Mangalore, you have to try out this place. They have a limited set of dishes, but I assure you they will not disappoint. I’ve been in Mangalore for more than 10 years now, and the food there still tastes exact same as it used to 10 years back.

Wonder how they do it, with all the challenges of attrition (cooks) and competition. I’m sure a lot of companies can learn from them on consistent quality delivery.
