Abhinav Bindra: Refreshingly Boring

Written on August 15, 2008 – 1:45 am | by Sampath |

No, I am not trying to jump on the bandwagon to claim my few moments of fame on the net writing about Abhinav Bindra. And I am no media person to pass judgment on an individual based on minutes of research and hearsay. But I had to write about him because he appears to be very different from many of the stars we’ve seen lately, and I like him for that. He’s made a billion people proud. While one Michael Phelps is shooting for 8 Gold medals in a span of one week, here’s one billion people’s darling shooter winning the first ever individual gold in what - 108 years? Quite an achievement ain’t it! (Here’s an interesting read - Michael Phelps would be fifth in Olympic medal table if he was a nation)

Enough about the medal already! What I really wanted to write about is how Abhinav (makes me sound like I’m his chuddy buddy, huh) has reacted to the whole gold affair. How I liked the sight of interviewers sweating it out to eek a few words out of him. Some of ‘em sounded like an interrogation than an interview. He has been fairly emotion-less throughout the media interactions (the only close contender I can think of, from a lack of emotions perspective, is Joginder Sharma in T20 finals). His replies have been primarily through sign language (with heavy use of shoulders) and monosyllables. His interviews have been dull, drab and boring, especially because I guess I’m used to the exaggerated emoting and long drawn replies dished out by many of our other stars. But Abhinav has been forthright in his comments, with his no-nonsense approach and appears to be bemused by the sudden attention everyone is showering on him. For him, it looks like August 11 was just another day. For the rest of us, he is and will remain an inspiration. Here’s Abhinav Bindra’s blog.
