The world runs on Windows. (Atleast for now. Though many of my die-hard-apple-user friends may not agree). Enough has been written about the pains users have undergone once they are hooked on to Microsoft products. But hey, God does not make anything perfect - Neither does Microsoft.
Anyways. As I am writing this, I am facing a problem with my PC:
My help window keeps popping up every 5 seconds. Its been happenning for the last 1 month. Very irritating. Windows is trying to help me here, I understand. Maybe it is intelligent enough to understand that its dealing with a very dumb user here. But please, I would do anything to stop this. I have tried stopping the help services, and any advice I could find on the net about similar problems. The only thing left for me to do is reinstall windows. Before I do that, if any of you out there know of any solution to this please let me know. SOS.

.. a phrase on the T shirt I picked up from Singapore last week. Do people really do that in Singapore?
Was there last week. I should say Singapore is the ideal place to visit if you have a shopaholic wife (Are there any other kinds anyways?), a very restless 4 year old kid, and you have plans to shed some weight.
Stayed at Park Hotel right on Orchard street. Visited Sentosa(ropeway, underwater world and 4D Magix were good), Jurong bird park (birds of prey show is a must-see), Night Safari (Great experience) and Snow city. Kiddo had fun there. Shopping was done mainly at China town, Orchard and Suntec. Got a taste of a variety of far east foods. Found Singaporeans to be extremely friendly - they love to talk. (this observation based on my interactions with the shop owners, cabbies and hotel staff - Maybe I am generalising. And then there was also this gentleman we got very friendly with - Sunny Jeremiah Ong, who is a limo driver cum Interior furnishing consultant).
We also had our share of embarassment, thanks to Kichu (my 4 yr old son) - At an Indonesian restaurant. Since I didn’t want to give chicken to him that day, I told him that chicken was bad. And while the waitress came along to collect the check, my son says to her: ‘I didn’t eat chicken ‘cos chicken is very bad’. Needless to say, I had to shell out some extra $s as tip to save my face. 4 year olds can be dangerous.
Overall, a great trip.

As a foodie, I take pride in stating that I can find out the ingredients of most Indian dishes just by smelling them. And I can tell you how stale they are too. I do eat out a lot (Not because I try to stay away from my wife’s cooking.. Just so you dont go in that direction). In Mangalore, we do not have many options for good restaurant food. But one amazing place that has dished out great Mughalai food with the same consistent good taste over the years is Royal Darbar (I think its now called ‘Royal Treat’, and has shifted couple of shops away. ‘Royal Darbar’ still exists, but thats not the same any more). If you are in Mangalore, you have to try out this place. They have a limited set of dishes, but I assure you they will not disappoint. I’ve been in Mangalore for more than 10 years now, and the food there still tastes exact same as it used to 10 years back.
Wonder how they do it, with all the challenges of attrition (cooks) and competition. I’m sure a lot of companies can learn from them on consistent quality delivery.

Its amazing how much time, effort and money people are putting into creating social, professional networking sites. Success of orkut, linked in have no doubt proved beyond doubt that such sites do offer a lot to their subscribers. One such new professional networking sites that a friend of my friend has been involved in development is visiblepath (www.visiblepath.com). This is slightly different in that it is more of an enterprise tool, and uses complex algorithms to identify the strengths of relationship between people. The idea is to harness this information for better sales leads. If I understand it right, the tool analyzes the strengths of relationships between 2 people by analyzing the amount of interaction between them. So, if I wanted to get introduced to a potential client, I would just search in my enterprise for that person, and the results displayed would tell me which of my colleagues has the strongest relationship with him. Sounds cool, ain’t it?

Even with the invention of great gadgets that help one stay organized, I still use the old paper n’ pen technique to list the thngs I ought to get done in a day. But as days go by, I see my list getting longer, and more detailed. I am still young (early 30s), but i find my mind so cluttered that I sometimes wonder if my brain has reached its limit trying to keep tab of everything i see, hear and perceive. I have been noticing this more and more in the last 2 years - Difficulty in recollecting names, certain events that happened recently and memorizing things that I need to get done. Hence the need to write down even the smallest of things I need to do.
But I was particularly paranoid today, when my wife pointed out the item - ‘Check scratch on car’ listed in my today’s To-Do list. She’d told me about a scratch on the car bumper yesterday, and i wanted to check how bad it was. And that item found its way to ‘Da List’. If I had to write down such a trivial item to do it, I dread the day when my To-do list will look like this:
- Brush my teeth
- Take bath
- Say ‘Good Morning’ to my kid
An indication of what the information age can do to you? Maybe.
